FIFO, FILO or FIWINS?

Are you familiar with the inventory management techniques FIFO (First In, First Out) and FILO (First In, Last Out)? Unless you are in the accounting field or involved in the supply chain, you probably do not encounter these terms very often.

Another technique that is very important for the automotive industry is FIWINS (First In WINS). FIWINS recommends that suppliers are involved early in the development of a new program or project. Raw materials suppliers such as, NOVA Chemicals, are often brought into a project too late in the development timeline. A late introduction prevents Tier One and OEM clients from utilizing the expertise of the DYLARK application development engineers.

At the beginning of the development process, the application development engineers contribute to the shape and scope the project with the OEM/Tier One core development team. Their knowledge and proven performance in materials, design and engineering provide significant contributions to the material selection and design direction of the project in the early stages. In addition, the early involvement of the application development engineers significantly reduces late changes, cost overruns, ‘band aid’ fixes and missed delivery dates.

As the development continues, DYLARK technical service engineers assist with the specifics of tooling, gating and processing. Finally, the sales team finishes the project by managing supply logistics and contracts.

When used effectively, the early involvement of the DYLARK application development engineers provide OEM and Tier One clients with excellent resources to meet project goals, timelines and budgets, with minimal last-minute changes. Involve us early, and remember - First In WINS.

The flow chart below depicts the typical program and project development sequence from ideation to launch.
