Introducing DYLARK 500XT Series of Resins The next generation of DYLARK resins arrives with the commercial introduction of two new high-impact grades – DYLARK 510XT and 520XT. The DYLARK 500XT series was developed through advanced technical innovation and close collaboration with NOVA Chemicals’ European customers. DYLARK resins have become a new benchmark of performance in Europe, providing distinctive properties and new development opportunities in instrument panels and interior applications. These applications include audio components, consoles, center stacks, radio buckets and a variety of structural brackets. NOVA Chemicals and our design partners continue to develop new application opportunities in seat backs, load floors, door panels and air bag modules. The DYLARK 500XT series of resins includes two new high-impact grades based on the Styrene Maleic Anhydride (SMA) copolymer. These resins are amorphous with a random “Atactic” chain structure, which provide high stiffness and excellent dimensional stability. Due to the presence of Maleic Anhydride (MA), DYLARK 500XT offers superior thermal properties, such as Heat Distortion Temperature (HDT) and Long Term Heat Aging (LTHA). The reactive groups of MA allow enhanced interaction with other polymers, such as polyurethane foams without the need for compatibiliser or coupling agents. These characteristics provide best-in-class foam and paint adhesion properties and make DYLARK resins a preferred material for soft and selective soft instrument panels. The DYLARK 500XT series is amorphous and reinforced with chopped glass fibers, similar to traditional DYLARK resins. DYLARK 500XT Performance The most prominent features of the DYLARK 510XT and 520XT grades are the superior impact properties — an increase of up to 40% in toughness. The higher impact properties provide improved handling of finished products, as well as weight savings due to the thin-wall capability of DYLARK resins. These enhancements are achieved without compromising DYLARK resins’ best-in-class properties such as foam adhesion, dimensional and structural stability, and resistance to heat and long-term thermal aging.
The DYLARK 500XT series offer improved rheology for longer melt flow lengths. The melt flow index (MFI) for DYLARK 500XT is in the range of 15 mm/min – a 100% increase compared to traditional DYLARK resins. Long-term thermal properties of traditional DYLARK are best-in-class and DYLARK 510XT and 520XT resins follow this performance. With a glass transition temperature (tg) of 125°C very little change is observed until temperature range approaches that of the tg. The thermal properties are enhanced further by the presence of glass fibers in the matrix.
Due to the nature of the material there is no significant short or long-term creep within the temperature range of 23-85° C at low stress levels of up to 3 MPa — a typical temperature range for automotive interior applications. Again tg plays a big role in controlling temperature dependent properties. The DYLARK 500XT series does not require pre-drying and may be processed as received. There is no requirement for special injection molding screws so processors are able to use general-purpose PS, ABS or PC screws. A typical melt temperature of range of 260-275°C is recommended. Recycling Similar to other DYLARK grades, the DYLARK 500XT series may be recycled without degrading mechanical properties. Typically, up to 20% regrind may be used with minimal effect on physical properties. Potential Applications DYLARK 510XT and 520XT resins are ideal materials for both soft and hard instrument panels where toughness, structural stability, and foam or paint adhesion are required. In addition, other automotive applications also benefit from these performance properties, including mid-consoles, cluster housings, knee bolsters and interior trim.>> Visit us at www.DYLARK.com for more information << | |||
