EPS ENVIRONMENTAL INSIGHTS

Resources/Raw Materials Usage
DYLITE Cups
NOVA Chemicals EPS ...
conserves resources.

  • Ounce for ounce, a foam cup uses about 1/6 the amount of total raw materials as a coated bleached paperboard cup.

  • Only about 5% of a foam cup is polystyrene - the rest is air!

  • Up to 170 times less process water is required in the manufacturing of EPS cups compared to the same size paper cup. Paper cups of the same size require 30% more cooling water.

  • NOVA Chemicals’ EPS has never used CFCs or HCFCs at any stage of its production

  • Pentane gas has no effect on the upper ozone layer. EPS cup manufacturers typically employ gas recovery systems to capture pentane emissions to avoid low-level smog formation. NOVA Chemicals has many grades of low-volatile EPS.

  • When compared to the manufacture of coated bleached paperboard products, EPS manufacturing results in:
          — 46% less air emissions
          — 42% less waterborne waste
