Beaver Valley Site
NOVA Chemicals' Beaver Valley plant is located at Monaca, Pennsylvania, approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Pittsburgh. The facility manufactures a variety of polystyrene and expandable polystyrene
(EPS) resins, as well as several Performance Products. This site also houses a Styrenics Technology Center, which was inaugurated in 1998 and contains an applications lab, along with two pilot plants for testing and customer demonstrations.

Beaver Valley was built by the U.S. government in 1942 and was used for producing synthetic rubber raw materials. More than 18 years later, it began producing DYLITE® EPS resins. The site was fully integrated under the ARCO Chemical name in 1981 and was purchased by NOVA Chemicals in 1996. Today, Beaver Valley manufactures ARCEL® advanced foam resin for packaging high-value consumer products. A series of planned capacity expansions has taken global ARCEL production to 100 million pounds. Beaver Valley also produces EPS for the newest performance product,IMx™ technology, a unique technology that is used to manufacture in-mold labeled EPS cups and containers.

Production
Liquid styrene, maleic anhydride, rubber and pentane are used in some form as a feedstock for the production of the various polystyrene resins and are transported to the site via barge, truck and rail.

The Beaver Valley site has the capacity to manufacture close to 475 million pounds
(209 kilotonnes) of plastic resins per year. Products are manufactured in pellet or bead forms using NOVA Chemicals' proprietary product and process technologies. product transportation to customers includes truck, rail and sea bulk, and when necessary,
in refrigerated trailers that are placed on trains, flatbeds or barges.

End Products
Beaver Valley Site Map
EPS resins are used in foam packaging and in insulation, while the premium grades known as DYLITE are primarily used for cups and containers. ARCEL has become the packaging-resin-of-choice for high-end electronics and for the reduction of energy and packaging waste; IMx technology resins are used in premium cups designed for hot and cold beverages; and our commodity solid polystyrene is used to produce food service utensils. Approximately 340 employees work in manufacturing and technology at the Beaver Valley site. The facility is ISO 9002 registered.
