Environmental Responsibility – Performance – Initiative

Clean, safe, vigilant practices … it's about good business!

Commitment to the protection of human health, safety and the environment is a top priority at NOVA Chemicals. This commitment is not only grounded in our communities', customers' and employees' rightful expectations - we are a strong proponent of the idea that clean, safe, vigilant practices are essential to business excellence. If we use all of our resources - natural and human - wisely and efficiently, we will thrive and prosper. Not just today, but for the long run. And we're in business for the long run!

Responsible Care® principles were developed by the chemical industry to ensure the safest possible management of chemical products throughout their entire life cycle. Like other Responsible Care companies, our environmental management systems are regularly reviewed, rated and improved.

We have focused significant effort and resources on reporting and managing our emissions and wastes. We participate in the National Emissions Reduction Masterplan (CCPA), the Toxic Release Inventory (U.S. EPA), the National Pollutant Release Inventory, the Accelerated Reduction/Elimination of Toxics (Environment Canada), and Canada' Climate Change Voluntary Challenge & Registry (VCR). Our 2001 Climate Change Voluntary Challenge Report is available on our Responsible Care website.

In 1999, we established a goal of reducing our greenhouse gas released per unit of product manufactured by 25% from 1999 to 2005. NOVA Chemicals Environmental Strategy states that our goal, by 2005, is to lead the industry with profitable, environmentally responsible products through optimal processes, resource use and stewardship.

To achieve this goal, five main approaches will be used:

  • mimimize the potential environmental risk associated with our products
        during their lifecycle
  • conserve resources
  • minimize emissions and wastes
  • proactively manage emerging environmental issues
  • achieve a sustainable competitive advantage through the effective use of technology
        to address environmental issues

We are committed to being a leader in achieving and maintaining superior Responsible Care performance.
