NOVA Chemicals' approach to managing sustainability along with health, safety, security, environmental protection, and corporate social responsibility is implemented primarily through Responsible Care®. For more than 20 years, NOVA Chemicals has continually improved its performance in these areas using the foundational principles and standards established by the Responsible Care program.

Building on our industry-leading Responsible Care performance, NOVA Chemicals has developed sustainability principles that complement our environmental achievements and our innovative product portfolio.

We support the United Nations' definition of Sustainable Development - meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. And we are committed to continual improvement in all areas of sustainability, especially environmental, social and economic — commonly referred to as the Triple Bottom Line.

Many of NOVA Chemicals established environmental, community and corporate initiatives already demonstrate Triple Bottom Line principles. NOVA Chemicals remains committed to building on our success in these three areas:

Environment — maintaining sound stewardship and careful management of our natural resources

  • We are investing in energy-efficiency projects and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at our manufacturing facilities.
  • We are committed to helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals by developing innovative polymers and products that create less waste through raw material source reduction and deliver energy efficiency.
  • We adhere to product stewardship principles that limit the impact our products have on the environment.
Social — developing products that deliver value to our customers and make everyday life safer, healthier and easier

Economic — creating economic value for our stakeholders, and continuing contributions to our communities through jobs, sales of goods and services and taxes

Sustainable Product Solutions offered by our products and ventures:

We apply proprietary technology to our portfolio of polymers and products to help our customers reduce their environmental impact. Our products provide energy efficient benefits for a wide range of applications.

We create durable building and construction products that limit the environmental footprint of homes and buildings made from our products. These products can deliver approximately 30 percent more energy efficiency than traditional construction materials, and can contribute to U.S. Green Building Council LEED certification. Our building and construction portfolio includes:

ARCEL® Advanced Foam Resin reduces waste by protecting damage-sensitive goods with less material — minimizing the impact on the environment. Since less packaging material is used, package size can be reduced by as much as 40 percent.

Downsizing packaging with ARCEL resin is a source reduction that triggers a positive domino effect - reducing a product's environmental impact throughout the supply chain. Each area within the supply chain consumes less energy and resources. Loading more packages in a shipping container, truckload and pallet translates into significant cost savings and the environmental benefit of lowering fuel consumption and emissions.

Polyethylene Food Packaging: Our polyethylene food packaging resins minimize waste by reducing the amount of material needed in packaging through downgauging. Read more in our latest food packaging case study.

Altra Cups featuring IMx Technology are an alternative to paper cups. Expandable polystyrene cup and food packaging has less impact on the environment when compared to paper alternatives. Additional information is available from the Franklin Study: A lifecycle analysis of foam and paper products.

Additionally, polystyrene food packaging is a safe and environmentally responsible alternative compared to coated paperboard products. Read the latest information from the American Chemistry Council about the benefits of polystyrene food packaging.

Industry Resources on Sustainability: There are many resources available regarding the environmental impact of plastics in comparison to competing materials such as paper or glass. In many instances, the environmental impact of plastic products is less than that of alternative materials.
